How do I know if my phone is Carrier Locked?

Edited

A locked phone is one that is tethered to a specific wireless carrier and can only operate on that carrier's network. Common scenarios include receiving the device by entering into a long-term contract or financing it with the carrier while still owing money. Whether you're looking to switch from one phone carrier to another and want to bring your phone with you, or you want to buy a new phone that you can use with multiple carriers, your phone will need to be unlocked.

Below is a quick guide on how to check if your device is unlocked.

iOS
Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock > No SIM Restrictions 👍 // SIM Locked 👎🔒

Android
Android devices typically do not have a means within the operating system to determine if a device is carrier locked. To determine this, you would need to either:

  • Reach out to your current carrier and ask if your device is carrier locked or

  • Try and user another carrier's SIM card and check for service

What do I have to do if my phone is locked?

If your phone is locked to your current wireless carrier, you'll need to contact them and request an unlock. You may be able to do this online or via their app, but most often, you'll need to reach out to their Customer Service. Your phone may not qualify to be unlocked, but if it does, they will inform you on how to unlock it.
