Fair Usage Policy

What is Fair Usage, and how could it affect a subscription?

Updated over a week ago

What is it?

A Fair Usage Policy is something that's in place to ensure that usage is fair amongst all subscribers on a network, and that 1 individual isn't taking up more than their fair use of a service.

Fair Usage is something that is monitored and enforced by the carriers: Carriers monitor usage across their networks for excessive use, potential fraud, and spam, and reserve the right to end subscriptions or suspend functionality if they deem an over use has occurred. The exact details of a carriers' Fair Usage Policy is not shared with us for security reasons, so we are unable to provide an exact number of when a service could be suspended.

How can a subscriber not exceed their Fair Usage?

The best way to not hit or exceed this limit, is for the service to be used for regular, personal use. This means not using data to upload and/or download massive amounts of data, not using texting to send mass or spam texts, and not using voice to solicit or spam call.

99% or more of all users will never hit the Fair Usage limit.

If you're unsure if a line is at risk of being flagged, please reach out to Gigs Support to have the line looked at.

If you are a subscriber, you will instead want to reach out to your provider. This is not Gigs, but whomever you have your subscription through.

Nuances

A line being flagged as violating their Fair Usage can include the following behavior:

  • A massive amount of data, calls, or texts during a billing cycle

  • A large amount of data, calls, or texts in a short period of time

  • Any behavior that appears to have fraudulent or spam usage
