Is my device carrier-unlocked?
Last updated: April 3, 2026
To use an eSIM your device must be carrier-unlocked — meaning it can connect to any network, not just the one it was originally sold with. A locked device will reject the eSIM installation or activate without any service.
How do I check?
Device | Steps |
iPhone | Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock — must say No SIM restrictions |
Android / Samsung | Settings → About phone → Status information → SIM lock status — must say Network unlocked |
Note: The exact path varies by Android manufacturer and model. If you can't find it, search "SIM lock" or "carrier lock" in your device's Settings search bar, or check your manufacturer's support page for your specific model.
What if my device is locked?
You'll need to contact the carrier it's locked to and request an unlock. Most carriers will unlock a device for free if:
- The device is fully paid off
- You've completed any minimum contract period
- The account is in good standing
Once unlocked, restart your device and check the status again before attempting to install the eSIM.
Are there devices that can't be unlocked?
Yes — some devices don't support eSIM regardless of lock status:
iPhones sold in mainland China (model numbers starting with CH) — eSIM not supported. No workaround.
Samsung devices sold in South Korea — eSIM not supported. No workaround.
