How does eSIM activation work?
Last updated: April 3, 2026
eSIM activation is the process of downloading a mobile profile onto your device so it can connect to the network. Here's what happens from start to finish.
What is a mobile profile?
An eSIM profile is a small package of network credentials — essentially a digital SIM card — that gets downloaded directly onto your device's eSIM chip. Once it's there, your device can make calls, send texts, and use mobile data on that network.
The activation steps
1. You purchase a plan — a subscription is created in the system and a profile is generated for your device
2. You receive a QR code or setup link — this is the delivery method for the profile
3. You scan the QR code (or tap to install) — your device downloads the profile from the network's server
4. The network provisions your line — this takes 1–15 minutes after the profile is downloaded
5. Service starts — calls, texts, and data become available
What can go wrong
Most activation problems happen at one of three points:
- Device not compatible or locked — the profile cannot be downloaded if the device does not support eSIM or is carrier-locked
- QR code expired or already used — codes are one-time use and expire after approximately 3 days
- Provisioning delay — the profile downloaded successfully but the network hasn't fully activated the line yet
After activation
Once active, your eSIM works like any physical SIM. You can use it as your primary or secondary line, and it stays on your device until you delete it or transfer to a new device.
Deleting an eSIM profile from your device does not cancel your subscription. You can request a new profile through the app.
