Can I activate my eSIM while using in-flight Wi-Fi?
Last updated: April 3, 2026
Yes — you can install and activate your eSIM using in-flight Wi-Fi before you land, as long as the connection is stable enough.
What you need
- A stable Wi-Fi connection (in-flight Wi-Fi works for most activations but can be slow or intermittent — a stronger connection is better)
- Your QR code or setup link already saved or accessible
- Airplane mode should be on for the flight, with Wi-Fi enabled separately
How to enable Wi-Fi with airplane mode on
iPhone: Turn on airplane mode, then manually turn Wi-Fi back on from Control Centre or Settings
Android / Samsung: Turn on airplane mode, then toggle Wi-Fi on from Settings or the quick settings panel
Install the eSIM
Follow the normal installation steps for your device:
- How to install your eSIM — iPhone
- How to install your eSIM — Android

After landing
Once you land and turn off airplane mode, your eSIM will connect to the local network. If it does not connect automatically, toggle the eSIM line off and on in your cellular settings.
Some airlines restrict certain types of traffic on in-flight Wi-Fi. If the QR code scan fails, try the manual activation code instead — QR code vs manual activation — which should I use?
