What is an eSIM?

Last updated: April 3, 2026

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card permanently built into your device's hardware. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you activate your plan by downloading a carrier profile using a QR code or activation code.

How is it different from a physical SIM?

Physical SIM

eSIM

Removable plastic card

Chip soldered into the device — cannot be removed

Insert card to activate

Scan a QR code or enter an activation code

Swap card to change carrier

Download a new carrier profile

One plan at a time

Multiple profiles can be stored; one active at a time

Move card to new device

New profile must be issued for each device

What do I need to use an eSIM?

  • A carrier-unlocked device
  • A Wi-Fi connection to download the profile during activation
