Changing Providers for your users

How to change the provider of the SIM that your subscriber is using

Updated over a week ago

What is Changing Providers?

Every SIM being used is assigned to a carrier. This may be AT&T, T-Mobile, or another carrier. When you change provider, you are asking Gigs to perform a SIM swap to a SIM that is associated with another carrier. Such as, you would be wanting to move a user from a T-Mobile SIM to an AT&T SIM.

Important things to note:

Please read over these things before hanging the provider for a user:

  • Since this is a essentially a SIM change, this will result in a new phone number.

  • An equivalent plan for the other provider will need to be set up in your project in order to do the provider change.

    • The equivalent plan must be the same price.

    • The equivalent plan must be for the same duration.

    • The equivalent plan will automatically be selected.

Difference between Changing Providers and SIM exchanges:

SIM exchanges:

  1. Activate a new ICCID in the same carrier.

  2. Phone number stays the same.

  3. Plan does not change.

Provider changes:

  1. Activate a new ICCID with a different carrier.

  2. Causes the phone number to change.

  3. Can only happen when there is a corresponding plan with the new carrier

    1. Example would be: SIM that on a 5GB T-Mobile plan can switch to a 5GB AT&T plan, but not a 15GB AT&T plan.

How to change providers:

Changing the provider of a SIM can be easily done from the dashboard per the following steps:

  1. Select "Change Provider" from the Actions button.

  2. Choose the type of SIM from the pop-up

    1. If applicable. Some subscriptions may be restricted to 1 SIM type as an option (either eSIM or pSIM).

    2. If you are choosing a pSIM, you will need to provide the ICCID of that new SIM -- eSIMs will generate their own ICCID.

  3. User Consent will be requested to perform this action (if applicable).

  4. If consent is needed, the new SIM will not be available until the user's consent has been given.
